Health Sovereignty China, WHO, and Reconfiguring Global Health Partnerships

This guest lecture on Health Sovereignty: China, WHO, and Reconfiguring Global Health Partnerships is delivered for the History of Humanitarian Aid module of the Leadership Education Academic Partnership (LEAP) — a flexible online postgraduate programme in humanitarian practice co-developed by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the University of Manchester, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. The lecture examines China's path to self-reliance in vaccine technology and immunization, exploring how China built its pharmaceutical capacity as a political and ideological project, and what this history reveals about health sovereignty in global health governance.

Socialism, Medicine & Global Health After World War II

The February seminar of the 2023/24 Wellcome Centre Seminar Series continues the theme of focussing on the work of our members in order to showcase our amazing Centre and colleagues.

In this seminar, we shared our research findings from the Connecting Three Worlds project. It explored how socialist internationalism diverged from developmentalist globalization interventions, shaping regional networks and exchanges of public health programs among "Second" and "Third" world actors. Through interdisciplinary dialogue and historical analysis, the seminar aimed to recover overlooked narratives and enrich our understanding of the intricate intersections between ideology, politics, and public health.
